Aegidius Sadeler was the engraver of Emperor Rudolf II, and the inscription says he drew this ad vivum, from life, in Prague in 1610. The Latin dedicates the print to Kaplíř as the emperor’s councillor and a director of the Bohemian Chamber: a man who served the crown for decades.

In 1618 he became one of the thirty directors of the estates. In 1621 he was eighty-six, the oldest man on the scaffold, and the first of the knights to die.
